East Midlands Carer Training
East Midlands Crossroads provides a range of training courses from our Training Manager, Martin Cook.
Martin has worked for East Midlands Crossroads for 9 years and within health and social care for 25 years initially as a Carer Support Worker before implementing and developing our thriving Cancer and Palliative Care Service in 2003.
Martin's professional qualifications coupled with his wealth of practical experience enable the delivery of interactive and comprehensive training sessions both in group and one-to-one environments.
Martin is currently in partnership with the Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire County Council Adult Placement Teams to train carers within their own home and Statutory Service Workers in group sessions.
His qualifications include:

- NVQ IV Care
- IOSH Managing Safety
- CISH Food Hygiene
- Manual Handling Trainers Cert.

If an alternative venue is required, the customer must (in addition to the course fee) arrange and pay for the new venue, travelling costs of the Training Manager also to be incurred.
Moving and Handling
(3 hour session, max 8 persons, £250 inc. venue)

Lesson Plan
Introductions - (15 mins)
Theory - legal aspects of Moving and Handling, employer and employee responsibilities, risk assessment process, anatomy structure and function of the spine, unsafe practices (45 mins)
Practical Session 1 - the 4 principles for safer Moving and Handling, Demonstration of each practice (30 mins)
Break (15 mins)
Practical Session 2 - explanation and demonstration of the relevant techniques for; assisting with mobility, and handling of inanimate loads (60 mins)
Closure - completion of paper work (15 mins)
Health and Safety at Work (HSAW)
(2½ hour session, max 8 persons, £225 inc. venue)
(2½ hour session, one-to-one in service user's home, £100 plus travel expenses)

Risk Assessment/Management - risk assessment and management as the core of HSAW, task analysis, a model of risk assessment (30 mins)
Legislation - The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, employer and employee responsibilities, subsequent legislation; COSHH, RIDDOR (30 mins)
Break (10 mins)
Legislation 2 - examination and discussion of main HSAW legislation (20 mins)
Quiz - recap on course contents and to check attendees understanding (30 mins)
Closure - completion of paper work (15 mins)
First Aid

Basic First Aid Techniques - priorities in an emergency, recovery position, resuscitation techniques, dealing with an unconscious casualty (30 mins)
Medical Emergencies Session 1 - scenarios of various medical emergencies are highlighted and the correct response procedure explained inc. practical examples (45 mins)
Break (15 mins)
Medical emergencies Session 2 - continuation and conclusion of session one (60 mins)
Closure - completion of paper work (15 mins)
Food Hygiene
(2 hour session, max 8 persons, £200 inc. venue)
(2 hour session, one-to-one in service user's home, £100 plus travel expenses)

Food Hygiene and the Care Worker - FH as particular application of the HSAW principles, risk management in storage, preparation and the serving of food, risk control measures, "the four C's" (30 mins)
Food Poisoning - the symptoms of the different types of food poisoning and the associated food groups (20 mins)
Case Study - application of risk control measures in the preparation of different dishes (20 mins)
Quiz - recap on course contents and to check attendees understanding (20 mins)

Introduction into Cancer & Palliative Care (3 sessions)
(3 X 3 hour sessions, max 8 persons, £750 inc. venue)
(3 hour session, one-to-one in service user's home, £300 plus travel expenses)
This course had been developed through close partnership with Macmillan Cancer Relief and forms the basis of our training for all East Midlands Crossroads' Cancer and Palliative Carer Support Workers

Session One "Cancer & Palliative Care" - (3 hours)
preliminary definition of terms and concepts, palliative care as holistic care, communication with person living with cancer/palliative condition, communication with carers, case studies
Session Two "Pain and Symptom Management"- (3 hours)
the concept of "total pain", recognising pain, the principles of pain management, case studies.
Session Three "Bereavement Care" - (3 hours)
understanding bereavement, supporting bereavement, course plenary/conclusion, signposting to further learning resources
The Experience of Dementia

Conclusion - feedback from session, signposting to further learning resources (15 mins)
